The pattern "//" means any number of hierarchy levels. When used in the beginning of a string, hierarchy matching starts just after the "//" pattern and ends up at the last character of the string. Any number of hierarchy levels can be skipped at the beginning of the pattern. For example, the pattern .//week matches all week nodes that are any number of levels below the current node (try it)

  var matchedNodes = xmlDoc.selectNodes('.//week');
  alert("Number of matched nodes: " + matchedNodes.length);
